Court turns away charges of immorality against ArabTV channel

By Hussein Hazazi
Monday, 19 July 2010

JEDDAH – The District Court has turned away a claim by lawyer Ahmad Al-Rashid against an Arab television channel that it broadcast immoral material “in conflict with Islamic values and the nature of Saudi society” after it ruled that the case did not come under its jurisdiction.

Al-Rashid said that he would take the case to the Ministry of Culture and Information, adding that it was no different in content to that of Mazen Abdul Jawad, who was sentenced to five years’ prison for discussing his sexual exploits on a Lebanese satellite television program, other than it being a “collective case” and not concerning one individual.

Abdul Jawad’s lawyer Solaiman Al-Jumaihi, meanwhile, has said that he is organizing a group of lawyers to support Al-Rashid’s case if the ministries of Justice and Culture and Information refuse to hear it.

“The case is identical (to Abdul Jawad’s),” Al-Jumaihi said. “How can the District Court turn it away on the grounds of no jurisdiction when it heard Abdul Jawad’s case which involved the same accusations?”

The Ministry of Culture and Information issued a statement last Wednesday saying that it is not the authority to consider the case of Abdul Jawad, as he is “not associated with any media body”.

The statement said the ministry’s role was to look into “media-related cases involving media workers, or culture-related cases arising through the visual, audio, written media or electronic publishing”.

Abdul Jawad, the ministry said, “is not an employee working in the media, nor does he represent any media body”. – Okaz/SG
