Shabab returns to Saudi league with a win

By Mohammed Al-Kinani
Tuesday, 28 September 2010

JEDDAH – Al-Shabab resumed its Zain Saudi Professional League encounters in seventh round with a 2-1 win over its host Najran Monday.

Striker Faisal Al-Sultan put Shabab, one of the two Saudi representatives in the Asian Champions League (ACL), in the lead in the first minute. Congolese striker Depa Alonga failed to equalize for Najran when he bungled with his spot kick sixteen minutes later.

Uruguayan striker Juan Manuel Olivera in the meantime helped Shabab double the lead just before the break. Alonga, however, came good for the host in the 76th minute to make it 2-1.

Shabab still has a match in hand.

The other ACL representative, Al-Hilal, was supposed to play Al-Ittihad, but the encounter was put off.

In another match, Al-Ittifaq shared the points with visitors Al-Fateh following a 2-2 draw at Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd Stadium.

The guest team scored first, in the 22nd minute, through midfielder Ahmed Bu-Obaid before his Congolese teammate, Doris Salmo, increased the lead in the 68th minute.

Brazilian midfielder Bruno Lazaroni first helped Ittifaq decrease the margin six minutes later and Saleh Basheer then succeeded in leveling the score 10 minutes later.
The draw pushed Ittifaq up to the second spot with 13 points. Al-Ittihad leads the standings with 18 points. Al-Hilal is third with 12 points, though it still has two matches in hand. Al-Fateh is 10th with five points.

In the third match of the night, Al-Hazm, playing at home, was held to a goalless draw by Al-Ra’id. The two teams will temporarily miss the services of two of their players after Hazm’s midfielder Naif Al-Mousa and Ra’id’s striker Ahmed Al-Za’aq were both shown red cards.

This result leaves Hazm at the bottom of the standings with three points, while a point to Ra’id moves it to the fifth spot on 11 points. - SG __
